Prison Island Tour
Tour Overview
Visit Aldabra giant tortoises & historical ruins on this half-day boat trip to Prison Island (Changuu Island), just off the coast of Stone Town.
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is located about 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town. Despite its ominous name, the island was never actually used as a prison but was originally intended to hold rebellious slaves in the 1860s and later served as a quarantine station.
The main attraction of the island is the colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, which were gifted from the Seychelles in the late 19th century. Some of these magnificent creatures are over 100 years old! You'll have the opportunity to observe, touch, and even feed these gentle giants.
The tour also includes:
- A scenic boat ride to and from the island
- Exploration of the former prison building
- Time for swimming and snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island
- Relaxation on the beautiful white sand beaches
This half-day excursion offers a perfect blend of history, wildlife, and beach relaxation, making it one of the most popular tours from Stone Town.
